Galway Races

Galway Races

The Galway Races Festival is one of the biggest weeks on the Irish Horse Racing calendar with 51 races taking place over a seven day period in the summer with some of the top horses around taking part. There are all sorts of races on the cards at Galway from Handicap Hurdles over 3 miles to 7 furlong sprints which makes the meeting a unique and exciting one for punters and fans.

Dermot Weld is the trainer to follow at Galway Races as he has been hugely successful for several years at the Festival. Weld has had over 200 winners at Galway and he seems to target his mounts specifically for a crack at Galway. Indeed, he has managed to get four winners in one day in the 2008 Festival which means punters follow his horses very closely.

Feature Races of Galway

Of course there are certain races that have become synonymous with the Galway Races and they tend to be the feature races which are the most lucrative. The biggest race of the entire week at Galway is the Galway Plate which normally takes place on the last day of the meeting. The Plate is run over 2m 6f and will always attract the biggest betting money of the week from punters and is always an exciting race to watch.

Another big race is the Galway Handicap Hurdle which is the feature race on Ladies Day of Galway races which is Day 4. Ladies Day is always popular which means the Handicap Hurdle has become a highlight for many with many horses coming to Ireland for the big race.

The Galway Handicap is the feature race on Day 1 of the Festival which means it is always the subject of big interest from punters at the track and in the bookies. the Galway Handicap is a 2 mile race and is another one that trainer Dermot Weld has a good record in as he showed by training the winner Majestic Concorde in 2008.
